Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a tooth to protect it, restore its shape, strength, and appearance, or improve its function. Crowns are used to save weak or damaged teeth, support large fillings, cover implants, hold dental bridges, or enhance the look of misshapen or discolored teeth. For children, crowns can also protect baby teeth that are at high risk of decay.

Types of Crowns

Crowns come in several materials to suit different needs:

  • Stainless Steel: Prefabricated and mainly used for children’s teeth as a temporary, cost-effective solution.

  • Metal Crowns: Made from gold or other alloys, very strong, long-lasting, and ideal for back teeth.

  • Porcelain Fused to Metal: Offers a natural tooth-like appearance, suitable for front or back teeth, though porcelain can chip over time.

  • All-Resin: Affordable option, but less durable and more prone to wear.

  • All-Ceramic/All-Porcelain: Best natural color match, great for front teeth, and safe for people with metal allergies, though slightly less strong than other types.

Crowns can be temporary (made in-office to protect a tooth until a permanent crown is ready) or permanent (crafted in a dental lab for long-term use).Crowns are essential for protecting weak or damaged teeth, restoring function and appearance, and supporting children’s oral health when needed.
